Shoutout LA: Meet Rick Caballo | Art Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Caballo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success? Icons aren’t built on an assembly line; they are carved out of stone! Hard work, persistence, and a great partner!!!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I’m self-taught at everything I do; it’s not the quickest way to learn, but you don’t have to wait for anyone else to teach you. I didn’t have the luxury of having access to the right teachers in my town. I dove in headfirst to learn from my mistakes as well as steal inspiration from others to help find out who I was as a creative. It wasn’t easy, but if I can see something, I can do it! From photography, videography, music, portrait art, carpentry, and building motorcycles, it’s all creative. I follow where my heart takes me, fulfill the soul, and everything else falls into place. When creativity comes in, you have to chase it no matter what time or place it is; it becomes a valve, releasing pressure and keeping your mind sane. Design is just a heap of lines accessible to everybody; how we choose to bend them depends on what the final picture looks like.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I need a teleporter because we live in Australia part of the year and the other part in Nashville, TN.

– Hike through Radnor Lake Park, taking in nature’s beauty.

– A quick mountain bike ride at Percy Warner Park.

– The many great restaurants in Nashville, including Barcelona, Optimist, and Peter Sushi.

– Go down to Bowies to watch a rock’n’roll band tear up the stage.

– Drop guests downtown to check it out (not my thing, but guests love it!)

Australia

My place with 1000’s of acres to enjoy stretching out to the ocean, swimming, dirt bike riding, side-by-side trail rides, watching kangaroos and wild parrots come to our back porch to say hello. BBQing on our cliff face, it’s a secluded but very calm and relaxing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

There are too many mentors or influences to mention, but the main one would be my dad. He can do anything with his hands, mostly out of necessity from growing up poor; he taught me a lot.

Perseverance, logic, hard work, and making mistakes sometimes lead to great accomplishments. My wife has inspired me to access more of my left brain as we bounce ideas off each other about landing somewhere special.

I’m also inspired by people like BONO, Sebastian Kruger, and Keith Richards, from music to fashion to everyday people doing what they love and doing it at their highest level!!
