INTERVIEW: Megan Nadin

by: RJ Frometa

Hi Megan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey!  I’ve been good thank you! Hanging in there through all the craziness that’s been 2020 and thankful to be releasing some new music!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Joker”?

“The Joker” is a song I wrote about someone that’s feeling lost, even hopeless and seeking some type of guidance or relief from what feels like a constant struggle. The beauty of the song is that it leaves you with the reminder that things do get better and not to give up on yourself – no matter how tough things get.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I actually wrote this song after watching the 2019 film “Joker”. It really moved me in a way I hadn’t anticipated. It paints the Joker as a good person with a good heart that’s doing their best while struggling with mental illness and constantly being met with disappointment, disapproval and heartbreak. Although it was a movie it really shook me because it really just highlighted the realities that many people deal with when it comes to mental health and bullying.  So I wrote “The Joker” for all of those people.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

There are and I’m really looking forward to it!

The single comes off your new album This Was Then – what’s the story behind the title?

All of the songs on the album, with the exception of “The Joker”, were written anywhere from 2 to 3 years ago. When I listen to them, they take me back “then”, back to the moments and feelings I was in when I wrote them.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was really just me going through life and making sense of a lot of what I was feeling and experiencing by putting it into songs. The recording process was a BLAST! There was a point in time when my fear and self-doubt made me very selective about who I’d share my songs with. Now to be at a place where I’ve come out on the other side of it and I’m able to work with people that help me bring these songs to life… It’s a pretty special thing.

What role does Nashville play in your music?

Nashville has gifted me the opportunity to connect with people that are helping me really explore myself and my artistry. Its allowing me to take my music into places and directions I never really anticipated which makes it so much fun.

How did your perspective change as you moved from Canada to the City of Music?

Now that I’m living in a music city doing what I love – it’s really validated that anything is possible if we’re willing to put in the time and effort.

What aspect of mental health and society did you get to explore on this record?

On this record I explored many aspects of mental health and society that we all face in everyday life. The album has songs that express struggles placed on our emotional and social well being from people, relationships, and ourselves as well as difficulties that can come from social constructs and the societal “norms” we deal with every day.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I found the inspiration for my  songs and lyrics through my personal experience –  like falling in love or dealing with depression; as well as things that have inspired me in my everyday life – like watching the film “Joker”. I’m a pretty emotionally sensitive person so it leaves me with a lot to write about.

What else is happening next in Megan Nadin’s world?

Patiently waiting for things to work their way back to “normal” when it comes to the COVID Pandemic so I can finally start touring and connecting with my fans. In the meantime I’ll be continuing to write, record and create;  as well as further exploring opportunities to write for other people!
